Technician Performing Hydro Testing

Pipeline Hydro Testing

Applied Technical Services conducts pipeline hydro testing to verify the integrity of pipelines and piping systems.
Hydro Testing
Hydro testing, also known as hydrostatic testing, is a nondestructive testing method used to assess a pipeline’s ability to retain water. The pipeline is filled to its maximum capacity, forcing all air out of the vessel and pushing water out of any cracks. A certified technician then performs a visual inspection, identifying any flaws or leaks in the structure’s walls. Recognizing areas of potential leaks can help prevent catastrophic ruptures that lead to costly repairs, unexpected downtime, and safety hazards.
Pipeline hydro testing requires the system to be out of service for the entirely of the testing process. Hydrostatic testing is typically required every three to five years, depending on the type of pressure system and its use, and the standards for this testing method are determined by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Internal Organization for Standardization (ISO), the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and the US Department of Transportation (DOT).
