Casting X-Ray Inspection

Applied Technical Services performs nondestructive casting x-ray inspection services for a range of industrial applications. Our team of NDT technicians helps clients verify that their castings conform to original design specifications and meet the requirements of various code standards.
Working with Casting Materials
Industries that use components made by the metal casting process heavily rely on them for the performance, reliability, and safety of their daily operations. Virtually every industry in every market uses cast components in some form. For this reason, ATS puts cast parts through our rigorous X-ray inspection to analyze casting quality, and to ensure each component meets the applicable standards. It is important to identify small flaws through such inspections before they have time to deteriorate into larger defects once put in service. Below are some common defects we find during casting X-ray inspections:
ATS X-Ray Inspection Process
Radiography, also referred to as X-ray, gives NDT technicians a clear look into the internal structure of nearly any material. X-ray inspections do not alter or damage test materials, making it a preferred method for casting evaluation. Our experts follow all applicable radiation safety guidelines when performing X-ray inspections.
To perform an X-ray on a component, our technicians need access to two opposite sides of the casting material. We transmit radiation from a source on one side; while a detector film records the differences in absorption on the other side. We interpret the resulting X-ray image and provide our clients with a detailed inspection report summarizing our findings.
