ASTM F1820 Modular Acetabular Device Strength Testing

The ATS Family of Companies (FoC) assesses the attachment strength of metallic hip prosthesis in compliance with ASTM F1820 modular acetabular device testing standards. The acetabular socket connects the human hip joint to the femoral head and femur, but chronic conditions and injuries can damage the acetabular and cause discomfort and pain. Fortunately, our medical device testing lab assists manufacturers as they design and develop ASTM F180-compliant products that improve the quality of life for patients with hip replacements.
What is ASTM F1820?
The American Society for Testing and Materials developed ASTM F1820 as the standard test method for assessing the attachment strength between the modular acetabular liner and shell. During the procedure, technicians apply force to the acetabular liner to disconnect the liner from the acetabular shell. The procedure’s results reveal the modular acetabular device’s reaction to different loads and highlight the maximum force needed to induce failure in the locking mechanism. There are multiple ways to test an implant’s compliance with ASTM F1820, including axial and lever-out disassembly.
Axial Dissassembly
Technicians apply a displacement to an insert along the polar axis to determine the axial locking strength.

Lever Out Disassembly

Technicians apply an axial displacement parallel to the polar axis to determine the liner’s resistance to impingement.
