ASTM F564 Metallic Bone Staple Testing

The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) measures the fatigue resistance of bone staples in compliance with ASTM F564 metallic bone staple testing standards.

What is ASTM F564?
The American Society for Testing and Materials developed ASTM F564 as a guideline for those evaluating the mechanical properties of metallic bone staples. The ASTM F564 procedure is divided into four annexes that provide information of the following:
ASTM F564 Metallic Bone Staple Testing Procedures

Annex 1: Bending Fatigue Testing

Annex 1 outlines the test method used to measure the constant amplitude of metallic bone screws during bending fatigue tests. During the procedure, technicians apply cyclic loads to the specimen to create a non-permanent bend in the sample. Once the sample experiences failure, technicians document the cycles required to induce failure.

Annex 2: Pull-Out Fixation Strength Testing

Annex 2 determines the pull-out fixation strength of metallic bone staples. During the procedure, technicians place a fabric or thin metal strap over a bone or bone-like material before attaching the staples to the fabric or metal. Technicians then connect the staples to machine grips and subject the staples to a constant rate of loads. Technicians continue the test until the staple loosens, the strap ruptures, or the fabric rips

Annex 3: Soft Tissue Fixation Strength Testing

Annex 3 measures the force required to remove a bone screw from its application.Annex 3 measures the load at staple failure. During the procedure, technicians use several staples to secure a soft tissue or a similar substitute to bone or bone-like material. Technicians then load the sample into a machine that begins pulling the specimen at a constant rate until the staple loosens, the strap tears, or the bone fractures.

Annex 4: Static Bend Testing

Annex 4 evaluates the bending curve within a metallic bone staple after enduring force. During the procedure, technicians apply a downward force to an extension block containing a staple. Technicians observe the load and displacement and measure the standard deviation and mean of the slope.
