Applied Technical Services (ATS) offers Volkswagen parts testing to OEMs and parts suppliers to help maintain compliance with pertinent quality standards and regulations. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as Volkswagen send materials and components to ATS for a variety of testing to ensure vehicle components meet industry standard requirements. Testing for the presence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in vehicle interiors is one area of testing that is frequently requested by OEMs and suppliers.
VOCs are a class of chemicals that emit from a variety of materials used in automotive interiors, including vinyl, fabric, leather, plastic, foam, and coatings. Exposure to VOCs are a health concern and have been identified as harmful to human health. The concern of potential exposure is compounded by other factors, including the airtight nature of the passenger compartment and the tendency for VOCs to emit in greater amounts according to changes in temperature and exposure to ultraviolet light. OEMs such as Volkswagen, as well as their parts suppliers, send samples of their materials and components to trusted third-party testing labs (e.g., ATS) to verify that their products meet quality requirements.
