Exterior Paint Testing
Applied Technical Services performs a wide range of Volkswagen automotive testing services in our state-of-the-art VW Approved Testing Lab.
Automotive Exterior Paint Testing
Automotive exterior paint serves as a protective layer against environmental elements, including UV radiation, moisture, and harsh weather conditions. To ensure the durability, color retention, and overall quality of automotive paint, our automotive testing experts perform rigorous testing through a variety of comprehensive methods, including assessments, color consistency evaluation, and gloss and coating resistance testing.
Automotive Paint and Coating Testing Methods
In addition to our comprehensive range of VW Approved Testing Lab services, Applied Technical Services offers a wide array of automotive testing solutions that align with the rigorous testing standards established by leading automotive manufacturers across the globe. Our offerings encompass a diverse range of services, including but not limited to:
Color Accuracy and Gloss Evaluation: Consumers expect their vehicles to have a consistent color appearance across all panels and components. Our highly trained automotive technicians employ specialized color measurement devices such as spectrophotometers to assess the color accuracy of painted samples. These devices measure the reflectance and absorption of light, allowing precise analysis of color variations to ensure that automotive exterior paint meets strict color specifications. Gloss measurements are performed using gloss meters that provide objective data on a coating’s level of reflectance. We evaluate gloss levels to help manufacturers ensure uniformity and consistency across different panels and surfaces of the vehicle. Gloss testing also helps identify any potential defects or inconsistencies in the paint application process or a coating’s chemical composition. ATS also specializes in paint and coating thickness testing.
Scratch, Impact, and Chipping Resistance Testing: These testing methods assess the durability and resistance of automotive paint by testing automotive paint and coatings to evaluate performance under various conditions. Scratch resistance testing uses standardized tools or abrasive materials to simulate scratching or rubbing actions. The paint’s resistance to scratching is measured, and any signs of paint damage or wear are recorded. This testing helps manufacturers determine the robustness of the paint against everyday wear and tear, such as keys, branches, or accidental contact with abrasive surfaces. Chipping and impact resistance testing evaluates a coating’s ability to withstand impacts from stones, gravel, and other debris encountered while driving. Test samples are subjected to simulated impacts using specialized machinery that propels particles towards the paint surface. The coating’s resistance to chipping and damage is assessed, and any paint loss or signs of impact damage are documented. This testing ensures that the paint provides effective protection against road debris, minimizing the risk of chipping and exposing the underlying surfaces to corrosion.
Corrosion Resistance and Environmental Testing: These testing methods are conducted to evaluate a paint or coating’s ability to protect the vehicle’s body panels from rust, corrosion, salt, humidity, UV radiation, sunlight, heat, and other environmental factors. Painted samples are exposed to corrosive and simulated weather environments in specialized accelerated weathering environmental chambers for an extended period of time. The samples are then inspected for any signs of paint delamination, blistering, corrosion, or other flaws. By replicating years of exposure in a short period, manufacturers can assess the long-term durability and performance of the paint under various climatic conditions.
