Cryogenic Tensile Testing

The ATS FoC offers cryogenic tensile testing to assess the performance of materials under tension at extremely low temperatures.

The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (ATS FoC’s) environmental testing labs offer cryogenic tensile testing to assess the performance of metals, alloys, polymers, and composites under tension at extremely low temperatures. We also provide impact, fracture toughness, fatigue, and thermal contraction testing. Each program begins with a review of your materials, service temperatures, and applicable standards. We prepare specimens, cool them with liquid nitrogen or other cryogens, conduct tests to failure, and deliver detailed results. Programs are tailored to your requirements to support material selection, component design, and long-term planning.

What Properties Does Cryogenic Tensile Testing Measure?

Extreme cold can reduce ductility and increase brittleness in materials. Cryogenic tensile testing quantifies these changes by measuring:

  • Yield strength and ultimate tensile strength
  • Elongation and reduction of area, which indicate ductility
  • Elastic modulus and stress-strain behavior

Comparing cryogenic and room-temperature results highlights changes in strength and ductility, helping you assess material suitability for low-temperature applications.

About Our Cryogenic Testing Services

Our laboratory uses specialized cooling systems and adheres to industry standards to ensure consistent, repeatable results. In addition to cryogenic tensile testing, we offer:

  • Impact testing for brittleness evaluation
  • Fracture toughness and fatigue testing
  • Thermal contraction and expansion measurement
  • Materials characterization and failure analysis
  • Compatibility testing with liquid nitrogen and liquid oxygen

These services support applications in LNG, aerospace, industrial gas, medical and pharmaceutical storage, and superconducting research. We can integrate multiple services into a single program to meet your schedule and budget.

When Should Manufacturers Request Cryogenic Tensile Testing?

Manufacturers should request testing before a material or component is used in cryogenic service, since room-temperature properties do not reliably predict low-temperature performance. Common reasons include qualifying a new alloy, supplier, or heat treatment; changing a welding process or design; validating a product before release; and preparing documentation for customers or regulatory bodies. Testing is also valuable after a failure or during maintenance planning, when objective data can identify risks such as brittle fracture and thermal stress. Early testing helps prevent costly redesigns and unexpected issues.
