The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) evaluates plastics in accordance with the ASTM D4674 testing standard. Plastics are a popular choice amongst manufacturers so theyโ€™re commonplace in all industries, but manufacturers must assess plastics to ensure that theyโ€™re safe and effective for their intended applications and environments. Our polymer testing experts conduct comprehensive testing to develop an independent and unbiased perspective on a plasticโ€™s performance when exposed to specific conditions.

What is ASTM D4674?

The American Society for Testing and Materials developed ASTM D4674 as a standardized test method for testing plastics exposed to window-filtered sunlight and indoor fluorescent lighting. Sunlight and artificial lights alter a plasticโ€™s color over time, and this standard helps predict the rate and degree of discoloration in office settings. During the testing process, technicians subject plastic samples to various types of fluorescent light, including UV light and cool white light.

More About Our UV Light Testing Services

Our A2LA-accredited UV light testing lab has highly advanced UV chambers that accurately simulate sunlight and its effects. Upon completing our services, our clients will have a data-driven understanding of their productsโ€™ performance and access to our staff who can further explain our findings. Our light testing services are especially beneficial to the following industries:

  • Aerospace
  • Automotive
  • Construction
  • Consumer products
  • Medical devices

Why Is Accelerated Light Testing Important?

Accelerated light testing is a great way to determine the long-term durability of different materials, including plastics. Light slowly causes discoloration, but accelerated tests enable manufacturers to see how years of light exposure may impact their productโ€™s appearance long after it is sold. This insight helps manufacturers do the following:

  • Strengthen quality control
  • Address weaknesses in a productโ€™s design
  • Comply with industry quality standards and regulations
  • Lower the likelihood of warranty claims and recalls
  • Improve the reputation of their brand and its products
