Drop Testing
ASTM D5276 testing consists of dropping a test subject from a specified height onto a hard surface, repeated several times with various package orientations to ensure a comprehensive assessment of its durability. This ASTM standard specifies the height from which the package is to be dropped based on the weight and size of the package.
The test subject package is dropped onto a flat surface that mimics the concrete or metal floors commonly found in warehouses and distribution centers. The package is oriented in different ways for each drop, including flat on its base, on its edges, and on its corners. This multi-angle approach ensures that the test evaluates the package’s ability to withstand impacts from all possible directions and orientations to simulate conditions of a package’s standard environment.
The package and its contents are inspected after each drop, and experts thoroughly document any damage, structural deformation, loss of structural integrity, or harm to the product inside.
