Applied Technical Services’ ASTM E1820 testing determines the fracture toughness of metallic materials.

Why are Fracture Toughness Tests Important?

Fracture toughness tests quantify a material’s resistance to crack propagation under applied stress. The results of fracture toughness tests help manufacturers evaluate a material’s safety and reliability when performing specific tasks. Failure to conduct fracture toughness tests may result in abrupt failure, expensive repairs, and unsafe conditions.

ASTM E1820

ASTM E1820 is the standard test method for measuring fracture toughness in metallic materials. The standard determines toughness using the parameters of K, J, and CTOD, and the results are represented in the R-curve format or as point values.

During ASTM E1820, technicians apply a load to a pre-cracked specimen to induce unstable and stable crack extensions. Technicians then use a fatigue test machine to split the sample to examine the crack growth and length. The results provide insight into the material’s yield strength which is helpful in material selection and quality control.

Applied Technical Services’ Mechanical Testing Lab

In addition to fracture toughness testing, our ISO/IEC 17025:2017-accredited mechanical testing lab performs an extensive list of services that evaluate the mechanical properties of ceramics, plastics, and metals. Our mechanical testing lab evaluates how materials perform in stressful situations and locates areas of weakness that may concern our clients. We perform tests in accordance with common standards such as ASTM, ISO, and SAE and conduct various types of tests, including:

  • Coating Impact Testing
  • Consumer Product Testing
  • Fracture Toughness Testing
  • Hardness Testing
  • Macrohardness Testing
  • Microhardness Testing
  • Taber Abrasion
  • Tape Adhesion
  • Tear Resistance
  • Tensile Testing

Our highly trained staff works with clients to develop procedures relevant to their unique needs. We keep an open line of communication throughout the service process to update clients on our findings and to ensure their satisfaction with our service. Our services are prompt but not at the expense of quality, as our labs adhere to strict industry standards to ensure that our services remain professional and beneficial to our clients.
