The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) determines the thermal expansion of materials in accordance with ASTM E831. Thermal expansion is an important behavior for manufacturers to examine as it can be used to determine if a material is fit for specific applications or conditions.

What is Thermal Expansion?

Thermal expansion refers to a materialโ€™s tendency to increase in area, length, or volume as temperature increases. As a material warms, its particles vibrate at higher speeds due to the increase in kinetic energy, leading to an increase distance between molecules which increases the materialโ€™s size.

What Is ASTM E831?

The American Society for Testing and Materials developed ASTM E831 as the standard test method for using a thermomechanical analyzer (TMA) to evaluate the thermal expansion of solid materials. During the test method, technicians initiate a materialโ€™s thermal expansion and electronically record the change in length as a function of temperature. The ASTM E831 test method is effective at simulating how materials may respond to the temperature fluctuations seen in the environment of their intended application.

More About Our ASTM E831 Testing Services

Manufacturers across various industries must monitor the thermal expansion of their materials because unforeseen thermal expansion can have comprising effects on a product or materialโ€™s functionality and safety. Fortunately, our environmental testing experts use our state-of-the-art environmental testing lab to evaluate our clientsโ€™ samples.

The information gathered during our ASTM E831 tests is beneficial to clients in numerous industries as it gives them a deeper understanding of their product, allowing them to make better decisions when doing the following:
