The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) developed ASTM D5865 to determine the gross caloric value of coke and coal. Technicians determine the sample’s gross caloric value using either an adiabatic bomb or isoperibol calorimeter and the results are represented using inch-pound and SI units. During the testing process, technicians completely combust the sample under controlled conditions to measure the amount of heat released during the combustion process.
