Lead Abatement Contractors
Lead abatement contractors detect and remove lead-based materials from a building in accordance with federal, state, and local laws.
How is Lead Dangerous?
Facilities built before 1978 usually contain lead-based paint coatings on central surfaces throughout the building, such as walls, doors, floors, and ceilings. Lead exposure is highest during renovation and demolition work. Heavy equipment can crush and scatter lead-based paint over the floor and other surfaces of the building. Construction personnel can track lead debris outside of the building if it sticks to the bottom of their shoes.
When disturbed, lead-based paint crumples into hazardous dust that is toxic to humans and animals. Lead dust enters the body through inhalation or the mouth, which makes lead a particularly significant hazard for young children. Decades of studies have linked childhood exposure to:
- Anemia
- Behavioral and learning problems
- Slowed growth
- Hearing and speech problems
Adults exposed to lead have reported the following:
- Increased risk of miscarriage
- Premature labor
- Increased blood pressure
- Decreased kidney function
ATS’ lead abatement contractors are EPA-certified to perform lead inspection and abatement services for commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities.

Lead Survey
Before hiring a contractor for repairs or demolition, building owners and managers should request EPA-accredited lead inspectors and risk assessors to locate lead-based paint coatings around a building.
ATS’ EPA-accredited lead inspectors can inspect surfaces for lead-based paint and document locations at risk of disturbance. Additionally, EPA-accredited risk assessors use their discoveries to design and enact a lead abatement response with the building owner or manager.
OSHA Compliance Support
OSHA’s 29 CFR 1926.62 standard requires training and protection for all personnel involved in construction and demolition work, including repair and renovation services. ATS can work with building owners and managers to ensure that staff and contractors adhere to OSHA regulations through the following:
- Exposure assessment
- Work practice controls and inspections
- Observation of monitoring
- Written compliance program
- Mechanical ventilation
- Recordkeeping
Worksite Observations
Whether you select ATS lead abatement contractors or proceed with a different contractor, our Resident Project Representatives (RPRs) can monitor the abatement team’s compliance with the agreed-upon scope of the project and with federal and local standards and regulations.
We can also perform air monitoring and take wipe samples as required under OSHA regulations. These measures ensure the safety of the lead abatement contractors and eventual building occupants.
Waste Classification
The EPA requires the testing of potentially dangerous projects before disposal. The Lead Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) characterizes the waste material as hazardous or non-hazardous. After testing, ATS can dispose of the lead-based material in the proper locations.
Lead Abatement and Demolition
Finally, ATS can perform demolition and cleanup services that adhere to safety standards set by the EPA and OSHA to ensure the health of future building occupants.
