ASTM Brinell Hardness Testing
At Applied Technical Services, we perform ASTM Brinell hardness testing following the ASTM E10 Standard in the Mechanical Testing Lab. This testing method is usually for materials that have a rough surface. Brinell hardness testing aims to determine if the sample’s surface is resilient or malleable. When the spherical indenter drops, if there’s a large indent left behind, then the texture is soft. If the spherical ball leaves a slight dent, it indicates the surface is a harder material. After the spheric indenter drops, we measure the diameter of the indentation. The processing and treatment of material all affect its hardness and potential applications.
Materials Frequently Tested
- Aluminum
- Cooper Alloys
- Steels
- Cast Irons

Common Test Forces
The most common force used for ASTM Brinell hardness testing ranges from 500kgf to 3000kgf. Non-ferrous materials use a power of 500kgf, and materials made of steel and cast iron usually use 3000kgf. Forces ranging from 1kgf to 1mm are also used, but they are infrequently applied.
Advantages of Brinell Hardness Testing
- Quick
- Applicable to light/heavy metals
- Easy to measure results
- Useful for irregular surfaces
Requirements for Testing:
- The surface where the test sample is placed must be cleaned beforehand.
- Select the proper indenter level
- Set the test table to the correct elevated position
- Keep the load on the specimen for the time specified and then release
- Remove the specimen and measure the indentation made
Common Hardness Testing Standards:
- ASTM E10
- ASTM E18
- ASTM A370
- ASTM E384
- ASTM E92
- ASTM A956
- EN 1043-1
- EN 1043-2
- ISO 6506-1
- ISO 6507-2
