Dynamic Tensile Testing
Unlike conventional tensile testing that applies force at a slow, constant rate, high-speed tensile testing subjects materials to dynamic loading rates, often in the range of hundreds to thousands of millimeters per second. This accelerated tensile testing method allows for the assessment of material behavior under conditions that simulate real-world scenarios involving high rates of deformation or impact.
High Speed Tensile Testing Methods
The process of tensile testing begins with the preparation of the material or component being tested. Compared to conventional tensile testing, high-speed tensile testing can require advanced preparation to ensure the subject can withstand the dynamic loading without premature failure. Once the specimen is prepared and the test material’s suitability for the test method is confirmed, our mechanical testing experts mount it to the testing machine where it is then exposed to high-speed forces under precise control. The rapid loading will cause the sample material to deform and ultimately fracture, at which point thorough data is compiled and analyzed. The testing machine records applied forces, displacement, and time to allow for the calculation of stress and strain values. These data points are used to generate stress-strain curves, similar to those obtained in conventional tensile testing, but with the added dimension of time. By analyzing the stress-strain curves, our engineers can see exactly how materials respond to dynamic loading and identify critical mechanical properties such as strength, ductility, and toughness.
