The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) evaluates an iron casting’s graphite microstructure in accordance with procedures outlined in the ASTM A247 standard.

What is ASTM A247?

The American Society for Testing and Material established ASTM A247 as the standard test method for experts examining the microstructure of graphite iron castings. The standard enables technicians to identify graphite’s particle size, distribution, and type which provides insight into a metal’s ductility, strength, machinability, and overall level of quality. During the procedure, a technician removes a graphite sample from a casting and observes it under a microscope to assess its microstructure. After evaluating the sample, the technician compares the reference charts in the ASTM A247 before classifying the sample by its distribution pattern, shape, and size.

Our services enable our clients to make informed decisions about their products’ potential applications and we acquire, collect, and present clear and concise information that assists our clients as they ensure their product’s durability, safety, and quality. We offer an expansive list of metallurgical services, including:

  • Failure analysis services for bearings, bolts, chains, pipes, screws, and more
  • Material identification services, such as alloy identification and contaminant identification
  • Grain size measurements and microstructural analysis
  • Brinell, Knoop, and Rockwell hardness testing

Why is It Important to Evaluate the Microstructure of Graphite in Iron Castings?

Graphite microstructure has a direct impact on the strengths and weaknesses of a metal material. By studying the shape, size, and distribution of graphite, manufacturers can learn important information about their material, empowering them to ensure that it is safe and suitable for the intended application.
