The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) determines the average grain size of metals in accordance with the procedures outlined in the ASTM E112 standard. Grain size has an immense impact on a material’s performance, so manufacturers analyze the microstructure of materials to ensure that their material selection processes are effective. Our engineers determine the microstructures of materials so that our clients can evaluate the quality of materials and make informed decisions about their materials’ end-use.
What is ASTM E112?
The American Society for Testing and Materials developed ASTM E112 as a series of standards that accurately determine the average size of the grains within a material. A material’s grain size is an important factor to consider because it impacts the ductility, fatigue resistance, and strength of materials. The ASTM E112 standard consists of the following test methods:
The Comparison Method
During this method, technicians analyze a material’s microstructure and compare it with images in preexisting comparison charts.
Planimetric (Jefferies) Method
This Jefferies method involves technicians measuring the individual grains within a micrograph which allows them to calculate the average grain size.
The Intercept Method
During this method, experts superimpose lines on a micrograph and count the number of times the lines intersect with grain boundaries. Experts determine the number of intercepts and the total length of the lines to calculate the average grain size.
