The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) measures intergranular attacks on metals used in aircraft production and maintenance in conjunction with the procedures and conditions outlined in the ASTM F2111 testing standard.

What is ASTM F2111?

The American Society for Testing and Materials developed the ASTM F2111 standard as an outline and resource for experts measuring the end grain pitting and intergranular attack (IGA) that occurs within aircraft alloys and metals exposed to production and maintenance chemicals. The standardโ€™s purpose is to ensure that chemical processes donโ€™t bring on any unforeseen corrosion that could compromise a component or structure.

Our Corrosion Testing Services

Our accredited corrosion testing laboratory provides a comprehensive evaluation of materials whose applications or end-uses will expose them to corrosive environments. We offer services that cater to our clientโ€™s unique specifications while also ensuring that we have a wide range of services that meet the criteria of standards such as ASTM F2111. Our services help businesses improve their material selection processes, optimize manufacturing strategies, and ensure that materials are properly evaluated for specific conditions.

Why Do Intergranular Attacks and End Grain Pitting Effect Aircraft Materials?

Chemical processes can have disastrous effects on a materialโ€™s grain, compromising its mechanical properties which can lead to a loss of strength and an increased susceptibility to corrosion. IGAs occur when a metalโ€™s grain boundaries are attacked and weakened, increasing the likelihood of cracks forming within the material. End grain pitting is a corrosive process within exposed end grains, and it causes rapid crack propagation that greatly increases the risk of catastrophic failure. Both ending grain pitting and IGA are extremely concerning when it comes to aircraft materials because their presence can be difficult to find until significant damage has been done.
