The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) evaluates ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene in compliance with the ASTM F2183 standard. Ultra-high Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) is a popular material for medical device manufacturing because of its versatility, durability, and high biocompatibility. UHMWPE requires extensive testing to ensure its suitability for specific applications, and our state-of-the-art medical device testing lab helps guarantee that our clients have the information needed to make informed decisions about how their UHMWPE material performs under specific conditions.

What is ASTM F2183?

The American Society for Testing and Materials developed ASTM F2183 for experts using small punch testing to evaluate the mechanical behavior of UHMWPE used in surgical implants. The test method provides important insight into a miniature disk specimen’s toughness, ductility, yield strength, and ultimate strength. This information allows researchers to compare how different UHMWPE materials perform under controlled conditions, allowing experts to conclude how the material’s wear performance impacts its mechanical behavior. The testing standard is also used to characterize UHMWPE materials following compression molding or ram extrusion or following the material’s removal from a patient’s body. The ASTM F2183 standard is important to ensure that UHMWP materials remain safe and functional while in use.

Understanding the Importance of ASTM Compliance

ASTM standards are internationally recognized, and they promote uniformity, which is critical to maintaining safety and consistency across different products and industries. ASTM compliance is especially important for medical devices because these implants and instruments have an immense impact on the quality of life for their end users. A product’s compliance with ASTM standards shows the manufacturer’s commitment to quality and safety, and compliance is often before a product can be sold on the market. Independent labs, such as ours, offer an informative and objective approach to testing that helps manufacturers remain competitive and compliant for years to come.
