The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) uses the ASTM D3884 testing procedure to determine the abrasion resistance of textile fabrics. Consumers and manufacturers expect quality fabrics to be able to endure the wear and tear associated with their intended environment and applications. Our abrasion tests help ensure the durability of fabrics by assessing their mechanical properties.
What is ASTM D3884?
The American Society for Testing and Materials developed ASTM D3884 as a standardized test method for those evaluating a textile fabric’s resistance to abrasion. The standard applies to test using Taber abraser, a double header tester attached to a rotary platform. During the testing procedure, technicians place the sample on a rotating platform containing two wheels. One wheel rubs the sample inwardly and the other rubs it outwardly. The friction causes abrasion marks that technicians label according to their severity, ranging from no visible damage to almost complete damage.
Our Abrasion Testing Services
In addition to our ASTM D3884-compliant tests, we offer abrasion tests that measure the following:
Residual breaking force
Residual breaking force measures the strength required to break a fabric and offers insight into a material’s average breaking strength.
Cycles to a specific point
A sample’s cycles to a specific point refer to the number of cycles needed for the material to reach a predetermined amount of damage.
Depth of Wear
Depth of wear measures the depth of the groves caused by abrasion wheels following a predetermined number of cycles.
Mass Loss
Our experts measure the amount of mass a specimen loses as a result of an abrasion test.
Why is Abrasion Testing Important?
Abrasion testing provides much-needed insight into a product or material’s durability. Controlled testing can accurately simulate the forces seen in real-world conditions, giving manufacturers an opportunity to make informed decisions about various processes such as material selection and quality control.
