The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) conducts tension tests on medical materials in compliance with the ASTM E8 standard.
What is ASTM E8?
The American Society for Testing and Materials developed the ASTM E8 standard as a resource for experts evaluating the durability and strength of metallic materials. The standard debuted in 1924 and has undergone numerous revisions over its century of use. Today, the standard is widely used and revered for its effectiveness at determining the mechanical properties of metals under uniaxial stress.
During the testing procedure, technicians mount the test specimen on the testing machine’s grips before applying a uniaxial tensile load to the specimen. Technicians gradually increase the load at a controlled rate until the test specimen fails. After failure occurs, technicians gather data that provides more information about the material’s mechanical properties, including the following:
- Tensile strength
- Yield strength
- Elongation at break
The data collected from ASTM E8 provides important insight into a material’s reliability and quality, which can aid in quality control and material selection applications.
About Our ASTM E8 Tension Testing Services
Our mechanical testing laboratory is staffed with experienced professionals who utilize their collective decades of experience across multiple disciplines to deliver competitively priced solutions to clients in numerous industries. We use state-of-the-art equipment that is well maintained and calibrated in compliance with ASTM standards to conduct our ASTM E8 tests. We have labs located in various locations throughout the continental US capable of conducting this test and similar tests.
Why is Tension Testing Important?
Tensile testing is an essential part of the quality assurance process because it provides such important information about the mechanical properties of a material. It allows manufacturers to determine if their products or materials have the mechanical properties needed to function under the specific conditions associated with their intended application. Tension testing is often used to predict the performance of various products, including:
- Medical devices
- Materials used in aircraft components, frames, and wings
- Materials used in automotive engines, components, and panels
- Metals used in construction
