The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) conducts compression tests on metallic materials in accordance with the procedures outlined in the ASTM E9 testing standard.

What is ASTM E9?

The American Society for Testing and Materials established ASTM E9 as a standardized test method for experts evaluating a metallic material’s compressive properties at room temperature. The standard offers important insight into a material’s mechanical properties, including the following:

  • Compression strength
  • Yield strength
  • Yield point
  • Young’s Modulus

During the testing process, experts apply compressive force on the sample’s axial load and observe how the material reacts to compression forces. The information collected during the testing and observation process can be helpful when assessing how materials will respond to metalworking, bending loads, and fabrication processes.

About Our Mechanical Testing Laboratory

Our state-of-the-art mechanical testing lab is fully equipped and capable of conducting tests that help our clients evaluate their products and materials in compliance with common industry standards, such as ASTM E9. Our ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation highlights our commitment to ensuring our labs provide professional and reliable results that benefit clients in numerous industries. Our ASTM E9-compliant testing services support applications in the aerospace, automotive, and construction industries seeking to evaluate the behavior of aluminum, steel, and other alloys. Our tests enable our clients to confirm that their materials meet the standards and qualifications needed to remain durable while performing specific tasks under specific conditions. In addition to our ASTM E9 testing, we offer other ASTM-compliant mechanical tests, including:

  • ASTM E8
  • ASTM E21

The Importance of Compression Testing

Compression tests highlight how materials respond to crushing loads. They’re an effective way for manufacturers to confirm their materials and designs offer the strength needed for a material to withstand mechanical forces. Compression testing comes in various forms, and it’s used to validate a wide array of materials from metals to concrete and glass. Compression tests are a crucial component of the R&D process, necessary to ensure that products are reliable, safe, and compliant with regulations.
