The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) evaluates the anti-corrosive properties of heat-treatable aluminum alloys in accordance with the ASTM G110. Heat-treatable aluminum alloys are popular in the construction, automotive, and aerospace industries because of their strength-to-weight ratio and resistance to corrosion.

What is ASTM G110?

The American Society for Testing and Materials developed ASTM G110 as the standardized method for experts evaluating a heat-treatable alloy’s resistance to intergranular corrosion. During the testing process, technicians submerse samples in hydrogen peroxide and sodium chloride solution for six or more hours. After removing the sample from the solution, experts analyze the material to determine the degree to which it experienced intergranular corrosion.

Understanding Intergranular Corrosion

Intergranular corrosion is a localized corrosion process that disastrously affects a material’s integrity. It negatively impacts a material’s individual grains, weakening its mechanical properties and making it more susceptible to premature failure. Intergranular corrosion is very important to test for because its presence is often very subtle, but it can have costly and even deadly consequences when left unaddressed.
