Applied Technical Services conducts alternate immersion testing on metals in accordance with the ASTM G44 testing standard.

What is ASTM G44?

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) established ASTM G44 as the standard practice for evaluating the corrosion and stress-corrosion susceptibility (SSC) of metals and alloys exposed to alternate immersion in a neutral 3.5% sodium chloride solution. The standard’s technical objective is to evaluate a metal’s resistance to corrosion when exposed to chloride ions in saline aqueous environments. During the testing procedure, technicians immerse the metal specimen in a solution for 10 minutes, then remove it and allow it to air dry for 50 minutes. The drying period accelerates the corrosion process and enables technicians to simulate how a material may respond to prolonged exposure in real-world conditions. ASTM G44 is commonly used to test materials used in the following industries:

  • Aerospace
  • Construction
  • Marine
  • Oil and Gas

About Our ASTM G44 Testing Services

Our immersion corrosion testing lab evaluates material performance in corrosive, aqueous environments. We conduct immersion corrosion tests in accordance with ASTM G44 and similar standards and procedures to determine how materials respond to partial or complete exposure to corrosive aqueous environments. Our team is well-versed in ASTM standards and conducts thorough assessments of metal coupons to ensure our clients have the information needed to make informed decisions about their material selection and quality control strategies.

What are the Benefits of ASTM G44 Testing?

Corrosion testing is essential for assessing the durability and long-term reliability of metals exposed to salt water. Immersion tests help manufacturers predict the performance of metals in their intended applications. Testing yields quantitative data for manufacturers to:

  • Improve material selection strategies
  • Prevent premature equipment failures
  • Determine maintenance schedules
  • Predict the lifespan of equipment
