The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) verifies the alignment of X-ray diffraction (XRD) instruments in accordance with the ASTM E915 standard.
What is ASTM E915?
The American Society for Testing and Materials developed the ASTM E915 standard as a resource for those verifying the alignment of XRD instruments that measure residual stress. The standard’s primary objective is to ensure that the instrument’s three rotation axes ( θ, 2θ, and ψ) coincide correctly, enabling experts to quantify and reduce systemic experimental error in XRD residual stress measurement.
The ASTM E915 Test Procedure
To conduct the ASTM E915 test procedure properly, the XRD instruments must be aligned according to the manufacturer’s specifications. Regardless of if they are fixed or variable, the ψ, θ, and 2θ axes should coincide. Technicians should center the X-ray beam on the 2θ and axes with a focus range that ensures the desired precision and error tolerances. Technicians should confirm that the ψ and 2θ axes, the slit positioned at 2θ equals zero degrees, and the x-ray tube focal spot should be placed on a line in the plane of diffraction. The X-ray’s peak should have the highest diffraction angle, which is also consistent with peak intensity. Iron powder that has a particle size above 1 µm is the ideal stress-free iron specimen, but powders via plastically deformed filings can also be effective.
