The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (ATS FoC) conducts ASTM C131 testing to evaluate the quality of aggregates used in infrastructure construction and determine their resistance to degradation from abrasion, impact, and grinding.

This method, also called the Los Angeles (L.A.) abrasion test, measures the durability of small-sized coarse aggregate under abrasion and impact using the Los Angeles Machine.

What Equipment is Used in LA Abrasion Testing?

ASTM C131 or L.A. abrasion testing allows us to classify aggregate samples both before testing and to quantify material loss after testing. Our trained technicians place aggregates and hardened steel spheres into the Los Angeles abrasion machine’s rotating steel drum. The steel spheres generate impact and crushing forces inside the drum, producing the abrasive charge needed for accurate testing. After testing, we use a 1.70-mm sieve and a precision scale to measure material loss and determine aggregate breakdown.

What is ASTM C131 Testing Commonly Used For?

State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) commonly reference ASTM C131 (or AASHTO T 96) in aggregate specifications and set maximum allowable abrasion limits, typically between 35 and 45 percent. Contractors must meet the requirements of ASTM C131 before aggregates are approved for use on DOT infrastructure projects.

ASTM C131 testing is commonly used to evaluate aggregates where material durability and wear resistance are critical, such as:

  • Asphalt pavements, roads, and highways
  • Concrete production
  • Base and subbase layers
  • Railroad ball fast
  • Load-bearing construction applications

ATS: A Trusted Partner to Infrastructure Clients Worldwide

Since partnering with SGS in 2026, ATS and our expanding family of companies proudly serves an even more diverse client base across the global TICC industry. Our clients rely on our ASTM C131 testing services to evaluate aggregate durability and abrasion resistance, helping to protect the long-term performance of their projects and assets. Industry partners who frequently request aggregate testing services include:

  • Manufacturers verifying aggregate durability prior to production/construction.
  • State and municipal agencies ensure long-term roadway and infrastructure performance.
  • Contractors working on asphalt, concrete, and transportation projects.
  • Engineering firms require reliable data to support material selection and specifications.
  • Property owners and developers assess material performance in load-bearing applications to protect their investments.

ATS is an ISO/IEC 17025:2017-accredited and ISO 9001:2015-registered testing laboratory. No matter the project, our goal is to deliver clear, accurate, and timely results to help ensure our clients are in compliance with industry requirements and standards.
