The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (ATS FoC) offers ASTM C117 testing in our aggregate laboratory.

How do You Measure Fines Content in Aggregates?

ASTM C117 is the standard method for determining the percentage of material finer than a 75‑µm (No. 200) sieve in mineral aggregates by washing. This process removes silt, clay, and other fine particles from coarser grains through a controlled wash. The results, reported as the percentage passing the No. 200 sieve, help do the following:

  • Assess aggregate cleanliness
  • Predict concrete strength and workability
  • Ensure compliance with specifications

Our ASTM C117 Testing Services

Our ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory provides ASTM C117-compliant testing with a focus on accuracy, traceability, and client service. We follow established procedures, use calibrated equipment, and document each step of the testing process in accordance with industry standards. Our experienced staff supports diverse projects and aggregate types. We offer flexible testing options, including Procedures A and B:

Procedure A (Water Wash):

Technicians wash a representative aggregate sample with water over a 75 μm (No. 200) sieve to remove fine particles. The remaining aggregate is then dried and weighed, and the mass difference is used to calculate the percentage of fines.

Procedure B (Water Wash with Wetting Agent):

Technicians wash the aggregate with water containing a wetting agent over a 75 μm (No. 200) sieve to dislodge fine particles from the aggregate surfaces. The retained material is then dried and weighed, and the change in mass is used to determine the percentage of material finer than the sieve size.

We offer an expedited turnaround for urgent requests and provide clear documentation to ensure aggregates meet the desired criteria for cleanliness, strength, and durability.

Can ASTM C117 be Combined with Sieve Analysis Services?

ASTM C117 testing is most effective when combined with a full sieve analysis. Pairing the wash method with sieve gradation testing provides a complete particle-size distribution for both coarse and fine fractions. This approach clarifies the nature of fines, identifies potential coating or degradation issues, and supports accurate mix proportioning for concrete, asphalt, and base materials. Our reports present washed-fines and dry-sieve data together in a clear certificate of analysis, enabling prompt, informed decisions.
