The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (ATS FoC) offers ASTM C666 freeze-thaw testing. Concrete, a key construction material, must meet rigorous performance standards. Our ASTM C666 tests confirm that concrete mixes resist rapid freeze-thaw cycles, ensuring they are suitable for harsh winter conditions.

Understanding ASTM C666

ASTM C666 is a standardized method for assessing concrete’s resistance to repeated freezing and thawing. It provides construction teams with consistent metrics, such as durability factor and mass loss, to evaluate susceptibility to damage. Since freeze-thaw deterioration often leads to early surface scaling and cracking, C666 results help set acceptance criteria and guide mix adjustments, including air entrainment and aggregate selection.

It includes two test procedures that simulate field conditions and assess durability using metrics such as relative dynamic modulus of elasticity, mass loss, and visible deterioration.

Procedure A (Rapid Freezing and Thawing in Water)

Procedure A subjects concrete specimens to repeated freeze-thaw cycles while fully immersed in water, maintaining near full saturation throughout testing.

Procedure B (Rapid Freezing in Air and Thawing in Water)

Procedure B freezes specimens in air, then immerses them in water during thawing, creating alternating dry and wet conditions that closely reflect real-world exposure.

About Our ASTM C666 Testing Services

Our laboratory is accredited by ISO 17025, AASHTO R18, and the Army Corps of Engineers. We perform ASTM C666 testing in full compliance with the standard, with an emphasis on reproducible and traceable results. Our technicians use advanced freeze-thaw cabinets and follow established guidelines to ensure accurate, reliable tests. Our staff has extensive experience in concrete testing and includes active members and leaders of ACI, ASCE, ASTM, ICRI, FRCA, and SWRI at both local and national levels.

Why is it Important to Test Concrete’s Resistance to Rapid Freezing and Thawing?

Concrete structures experience freeze-thaw cycles that can cause microcracking, surface scaling, and reduced load-bearing capacity. Addressing freeze-thaw durability helps do the following:

  • Support quality control
  • Prevent premature repairs
  • Extend service life
  • Maintain safe conditions

About the ATS FoC: A Legacy of Service Excellence

Applied Technical Services began as a metro Atlanta-based engineering firm in 1967. In the decades since, we’ve broadened our footprint, expanded our capabilities, and added additional companies to the family. Today, we have experts and facilities throughout the United States, along with an expansive range of capabilities, bolstering our ability to serve clients in need of testing, inspection, and certification (TIC) services.

In 2026, the ATS FoC joined SGS, the world’s leading TIC company. Our partnership with SGS enables us to continue our tradition of service excellence while providing access to a broader range of capabilities and credentials.
