Evaluating Large-Sized Aggregates

The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (ATS FoC) conducts ASTM C535 testing to evaluate the durability of aggregates larger than 19 mm. This test measures resistance to abrasion and impact, helping clients select construction materials such as crushed stone, gravel, concrete that meet project specifications and regulatory standards.

How does ASTM C535 Determine Abrasion Loss in Aggregates?

ASTM C535, or the Los Angeles abrasion test, measures the durability of large, coarse aggregates under extreme mechanical stress with the Los Angeles Machine. Our trained technicians load aggregates and hardened steel spheres into the rotating drum of the Los Angeles abrasion machine. The spheres deliver impact and crushing forces for effective abrasion. After rotation, a 1.70-mm sieve and precision scale are used to measure material loss and assess aggregate breakdown.

We calculate Los Angeles Abrasion Loss (%) by dividing the weight of material lost by the original sample weight and multiplying by 100.

Lower percentage loss, typically under 30–40%, indicates higher aggregate durability.
Higher percentage loss signals reduced aggregate durability.

Aggregates with high abrasion loss are less suitable for heavy-duty applications. Similarly, ASTM C131 applies the L.A. method to smaller aggregates under 37.5 mm.

ATS Serves Industry Clients Who Rely on ASTM C535 Testing

Since joining SGS in 2026, ATS has broadened its client base within the global TICC industry. Project and material engineers rely on our ASTM C535 testing to verify the durability and performance of critical infrastructure, including:

  • Road construction: asphalt pavement aggregates and highways
  • Heavy-duty concrete: bridges, dams, and industrial floors
  • Railroad ballast: crushed stone supporting railway tracks under heavy train loads
  • Airport pavements: runways designed for heavy aircraft loads
  • Industrial surfaces: ports, container yards, and loading docks

ATS is an ISO/IEC 17025:2017-accredited and ISO 9001:2015-registered testing laboratory. For every project, we aim to deliver clear, accurate, and timely results to help our clients meet industry requirements and standards.
