Reliable Concrete Testing Starts with ASTM C172
The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (ATS FoC) performs ASTM C172 testing to confirm that freshly mixed concrete samples are collected correctly before further testing.
Adhering to this standard helps ensure samples accurately represent the concrete being placed and supports quality control and construction compliance.
ASTM C172 Concrete Sampling Procedures in Practice
ASTM C172 concrete sampling requires collecting fresh concrete directly from mixers during discharge to ensure the sample represents the entire batch. Our trained technicians take several portions from the middle of the load and combine them into a single composite sample.
Sampling must be completed within 15 minutes to prevent changes in concrete properties. The composite sample is mixed, protected from contamination, and large aggregates are removed. The concrete sample can then be used for further testing.
What Tests Can be Performed from a Concrete Sample?
A single concrete sample allows technicians to perform a range of tests used to evaluate strength, durability, consistency, and long-term performance.
- Slump – ASTM C143
- Air Content – ASTM C231/C173
- Temperature – ASTM C1064
- Compressive Strength – ASTM C31
These tests and others confirm whether the concrete meets project specifications and can withstand real-world conditions, such as heavy loads and extreme environments.
