The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (ATS FoC) performs concrete core testing in accordance with ASTM C42 to determine the compressive strength of hardened concrete. ASTM C42/C42M is the recognized standard for obtaining and testing drilled cores and sawed beams.

How is ASTM C42 Applied in Concrete Testing?

ASTM C42 is used to extract and test concrete cores to assess durability and condition. Core samples are drilled from structures such as slabs, columns, or beams, prepared to standard dimensions, and tested in compression. This method provides a more accurate estimate of in-place concrete strength than relying on lab-cast cylinders alone.

ASTM C42 can be used in concrete testing to determine:

  • Compressive Strength
  • Splitting Tensile Strength
  • Flexural Strength
  • Toughness

What Factors Affect the Core Strength of Concrete?

Core strength can be affected by a number of properties, such as:

  • Location within the structure (bottom concrete vs. top concrete)
  • Core orientation (size and geometry)
  • Moisture conditions
  • Drilling damage
  • Concrete age
  • Environmental exposure

If older concrete structures show signs of distress or low strength is suspected during construction, our engineers can apply ASTM C42 core testing to assess the concrete’s quality. The data recorded can help clients assess material performance, make informed construction decisions, and plan repairs when needed.

Confidence Built on Quality Testing

At ATS, our team understands the importance of structural integrity supported by accurate data reports.
