The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) conducts drop-weight tests in accordance with the ASTM E208 testing standard.

What is ASTM E208?

The American Society for Testing and Material developed the ASTM E208 testing standard as an outline for determining the nil-ductility transition temperature of ferritic steels. The standard’s objective is to evaluate ferritic steels to determine their nil-ductility transition temperature, which signifies the temperature at which the material transitions from ductile to brittle. During the testing process, technicians apply a controlled impact to a test specimen using a drop-weight apparatus.

The standard is especially effective for the following industries where fracture toughness is important, such as:

  • Aerospace
  • Automotive
  • Manufacturing
  • Renewable energy

Our laboratory is fully equipped and accredited to perform ASTM E208 testing. Our state-of-the-art drop-weight testing equipment enables us to comply with the procedural guidelines outlined in the standard. Our team of experienced technicians ensures accurate preparation and testing of specimens.

Upon completion of our services, we provide comprehensive reports containing detailed analysis of the NDT temperature and its implications for material performance. Our clients can rest assured that their materials are evaluated in compliance with rigorous standards, providing critical insights into their product’s ability to excel in certain conditions and environments.

Why is ASTM E208-Compliance Important?

Compliance with ASTM E208 ensures that materials meet the stringent safety and performance criteria required to maintain quality control and reduce the risk of catastrophic failures in critical applications. Adherence to regulatory requirements not only opens manufacturers up to new markets, but it also highlights their commitment to safety and transparency. Regulatory compliance is a prerequisite to selling products to consumers and our lab is eager and equipped to help our clients support as many customers as possible.
