What is ASTM E1251?
The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) established ASTM E1251 as a standardized method for those who use AES to evaluate the chemical composition of aluminum and aluminum alloy samples. The test method involves a technician creating a high-energy spark between a counter electrode and sample, allowing them to observe the light emitted by excited atoms. Upon analyzing the wavelengths of the emitted light, experts can not only the presence of certain elements, but they can also discern the concentration of a wide range of elements, including:
- Magnesium
- Nickel
- Lithium
- Zinc
- Copper
- Lead
- Iron

Why is It Important to Assess the Properties of Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys?
