What is a Material’s Glass Transition Temperature?
A material’s glass transition temperature (Tg) is the temperature at which the material changes from a glassy and hard state to a leathery and soft state. Tg provides important insight into a material’s strength and overall ability to function as intended when exposed to temperatures and environments. In addition to strength, glass transitions reveal information about various other mechanical properties, including:
- Impact resistance
- Modulus of elasticity
- Operational temperature
What is ASTM E1545?
The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) developed ASTM E1545 as the standardized testing procedure for technicians using thermomechanical analysis (TMA) to determine a material’s glass transition temperature. During the test method, experts subject a sample to controlled heat as they measure the sample’s dimensional changes as it warms. Following the dimensional changes, experts analyze the change in the sample’s thermal expansion coefficient which enables them to identify its Tg.
