A welder performs a horizontal weld for a 2G weld test.

2G Weld Testing

ATS supports the significant career step of 2G weld testing through our approved facilities and certified weld inspectors (CWI). 2G testing refers to a certification test that proves a welder can lay a horizontal weld in a groove joint between two metals. If a welder passes the weld test, they are also certified to perform groove and fillet welds in the flat (first) and horizontal (second) positions.
Clients may request our weld observation and testing services for many reasons, such as vetting potential hires, earning documented certification from the AWS, and testing materials for critical infrastructures and products.
Welding Facility and Inspectors
Our expansive and brightly lit weld facility includes welding booths ideal for weld certification testing. We have the equipment for commonly used welding processes, including GMAW, GTAW, SMAW, and FCAW. If a welder does not bring a test coupon, they can purchase one from our plate and pipe selection for a reasonable fee.
We have a team of welding experts with decades of combined experience. Our staff includes certified inspectors, professional engineers, NDT technicians, and professional welders. Having ample experience and training, they can recognize the proper setup for producing a weld clear of contaminants and scale.
A certified supervisor can determine if a welder uses the appropriate posture when welding in a horizontal position. The inspector can also review the welder’s temperature control and compliance with the Welding Procedure Specification document and industry standards.
Weld Testing and Analysis
After the test, CWIs can analyze the weld at the same facility. Mechanical and nondestructive weld inspections locate defects and inconsistencies, such as incomplete penetration, slag, undercutting, and cracks. These analyses allow an inspector to assess the weld’s characteristics, such as:
The ATS weld lab is A2LA-accredited for mechanical and nondestructive tests, including:

A CWI can also test if the weld meets a client’s specifications and the requirements of industry standards from the AWS, ASME, MIL-STD, AMS, and API.
