The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) offers sound calibrator services that calibrate sound level meters.
What is a Sound Level Meter, and What is Sound Pressure?
A sound level meter is a device that measures a sound’s loudness. These handheld devices contain microphones that convert sound waves into electrical signals allowing users to directly measure sound pressure levels.
Sound pressure refers to the deviation in atmospheric pressure caused by a sound’s force. Expressed as decibels (DB), sound pressure levels are monitored for various reasons including:
What is a Sound Calibrator, and How is It Used?
A sound calibrator or an acoustic calibrator is a portable device used to calibrate sound level meters. During calibration, an ATS technician connects the sound meter to a calibrated sound calibrator to ensure both devices register the same values. If our client’s sound level meter is inaccurate, we work diligently to resolve the issue to ensure our client’s operation is up and running as soon as possible.
Why is it Important to Calibrate Sound Level Meters?
Calibration helps to maintain the effectiveness of sound level meters. Factors such as age, humidity, temperature, and of course damage can hinder the meter’s accuracy, causing it to yield inaccurate measurements. Failure to calibrate a sound level meter may result in the following:
