Gloss Meter Calibration
Applied Technical Services performs calibrations on a wide variety of tools and equipment. We offer gloss meter calibration services to ensure that our clients’ precision instruments are returning the most accurate measurements possible.
What is Gloss and Why Measure It?
Gloss is a visual attribute that we see whenever we look at any surface. Some fraction of the light shining on a surface strikes at a given angle and bounces, giving off a reflection. The quality of the reflection, specifically how clear and distinct it is (the glossiness of the reflection), depends on a variety of factors including:
- The angle at which the reflection is perceived
- How much light diffuses
- How much light is reflected
The first two of these factors are largely determined by the characteristics of the surface being observed; for instance, a smooth surface tends to yield a more distinct reflection with contrasting colors and definite shapes. Polished metals and certain types of paint coats are very glossy for this reason. Alternatively, a rough surface causes the light to diffuse and thus yield a hazier image — if any at all. Their surface roughness is the reason why hair produces little gloss and cotton shirts produce none whatsoever.
Because gloss is a discernible visual characteristic, it may affect a consumer’s choice when deciding whether to purchase or pass up an item. To control for this quality (and give consumers every reason to buy), manufacturers and product designers need to measure the gloss of their product’s surface. Testers accomplish this by using a gloss meter.
Reasons to Pursue Gloss Meter Calibration
Gloss meters work by directing light at a surface and then measuring the reflection in gloss units (GU). The intensity of the light and the angles at which it hits the surface are standardized, and thus must remain consistent to return useful measurements. Furthermore, the measurements themselves are derived according to how reflective they are compared to a standard black glass sample with a known refractive index. To ensure that their sensitive tools return accurate and actionable measurements, many clients turn to ATS for reliable gloss meter calibration services.
Calibration Labs at ATS
All calibrations performed include As Found and As Left Data and are traceable to NIST, The National Institute of Standard and Technology and are performed in accordance to documented and controlled procedures. Our Quality Assurance system complies with the applicable requirements of ANSI/NCSL Z540-1, ISO 9001, 10CFR50 Appendix B, 10CFR Part 21 and ISO/IEC 17025. Upon request, we can provide calibrations that are accredited to A2LA. You can also be set up on our web-based interface, iPortal, which gives you access to electronic copies of Calibration Certificates, current asset status, asset history and due date reports for your equipment.
