The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (ATS FoC) uses ASTM E436 drop-weight tear testing (DWTT) to evaluate fracture behavior in low-alloy ferritic steels. We test full-thickness specimens (3.18 mm to 19.1 mm) under high-impact loading at various temperatures to assess crack propagation resistance and ductile-to-brittle transition. This approach provides real-world insight into how steels perform under demanding conditions, helping determine whether materials will resist a running crack or allow it to spread over long distances.

How the ASTM E436 Drop-Weight Tear Test Process Works

ASTM E436 testing replicates real-world conditions where cracks can rapidly spread through steel pipelines and structures. Since ferritic steels respond differently under stress or demanding conditions, understanding steel’s crack resistance helps determine whether it will gradually crack and tear, absorb energy, or result in sudden fracture.

  • Prepare a full-thickness notched steel specimen.
  • Condition the specimen at varying temperatures and identify the temperature range at which the ductile-to-brittle transition occurs.
  • Apply drop-weight impact testing to initiate and propagate the crack.
  • Analyze fracture behavior to assess the material’s response to impact.

    As temperatures decrease, the risk of brittle fracture increases. Testing across a range of temperatures shows how fracture behavior can shift while in service, helping you determine whether the material remains ductile or becomes prone to brittle failure.

    What are the Key Differences Between ASTM E436 Testing and Charpy Testing?

    While both are forms of fracture resistance testing, ASTM E436 (DWTT) testing and Charpy testing differ in specimen size and the results they evaluate. Charpy testing measures impact using small, notched specimens and the energy absorbed during fracture to determine toughness. ASTM E436 requires large, full-thickness specimens to evaluate crack propagation and ductile-to-brittle transition behavior.
