How is Impact Resistance Measured in Plastics?
Impact resistance in plastics is measured by the energy a standardized sample absorbs before fracturing under a sudden, high-force blow from a calibrated pendulum. The sample is clamped vertically and struck at the front notch. The machine records the pendulum’s rise after impact, which indicates the energy absorbed. A higher rise reflects lower toughness and impact resistance. These tests determine whether a plastic is ductile and energy-absorbing or brittle and prone to snapping.
Results are typically reported in joules per square meter (J/m²) or kilojoules per square meter (kJ/m²).
