The Applied Technical Family of Companies (FoC) evaluates spinal implants in accordance with ASTM F2706 spinal implant fatigue implant testing. Our medical device testing lab helps ensure that our clients’ spinal implants perform as expected and qualify for clinical use.

What is ASTM F2706 Spinal Implant Fatigue Testing?

The American Society for Testing and Materials established ASTM F2706 as a guideline for the testing methods used to quantify the dynamic and mechanical characteristics of occipital-cervical-thoracic and occipital-cervical spinal implant assemblies. Occipital-cervical-thoracic and occipital-cervical spinal implant assemblies provide stability to the spine during arthrodesis, where two or more joints are fused to eliminate arthritis-related pain. During the procedure, lab technicians subject the sample to the several static and fatigue loads, including the following:

Static Testing

  • Compression Bending
  • Tensile Bending
  • Torsion Testing

Fatigue Testing

  • Compressional Bending Fatigue Testing
  • Torsional Fatigue Testing

The Importance of Medical Device Testing

Medical devices have improved the safety, efficiency, and reliability of modern healthcare practices. These devices must undergo extensive evaluations that allow manufacturers to develop and further enhance the functionality of their products. Failure to properly evaluate and test medical devices could compromise patients’ health and disqualify products from the marketplace.
